ST. STANISLAUS JUSTICE AND PEACE COMMITTEE MINUTES

                                                         APRIL 7, 2008

Call to Order:  Mary Ann Krems

Present:  Rebecca Lee, Steve Brilowski, Beth Mortensen, Kim Delikowski, Dennis and Marcy Ferriter. Guest: Dave Fletcher  Excused:  Sarah Gwidt

Presentation: Dave Fletcher presented the idea of St. Stans forming a missionary project for members of the parish that would outreach to 3rd world countries.  The idea has been brought to the parish and finance councils and it was determined that the Justice and Peace committee would be the appropriate group to coordinate a decision.  Discussion centered on the kind of missionary services available. The parish would like to have something to offer college students as well as parish families.  Dave asked that we submit recommendations to the parish council on how to proceed.

Committee discussed  options and consensus is for the following.  A brief survey in the pews to determine parish interest.  (Becky Lee will compile and circulate to committee for approval.)  Once a determination of interest is resolved, J&P will call a meeting and have some models of service to be shared with the group to determine the involvement to do.

OLD BUSINESS:

1.      Justice and Peace Presentations:  Discussion centered on how to reach parishoners with topics like the excellent presentations offered the past several months but with so few parish members in attendance.  Suggestions were to 1. do in conjunctions with other parish activities with promotional materials on justice and peace issues. 2. Provide handouts on topics in the bulletin or short explanations that are already being provided. Positive views on that is that the bulletin could become a talking point for families on justice and peace issues.

NEW BUSINESS:

2.      Bread for the World Sunday:  Material and help is being offered by Bread for the World to have an “Offering of Letters” in the fall.  It was discussed offering a “Hunger Sunday” in the fall where the letters could be done and in addition, sharing of material from the Hunger Poverty Partnership, Farm Shed and J&P could promote what the parish is doing to address hunger issues.  Justice and Peace will check with parish on Sundays that are available

3. .  Meal at House of Peace:  Becky Lee agreed to coordinate our final meal of the season and will contact House of Peace for a date.  June will be the preferred time slot.

4.      Food Collections on First Sunday: Gwidts are scheduled for May (St. Vincent De Paul), Ferriters are for June (Mobil Pantry), Czaikowskis for July (Operation Bootstrap), Aug. for Mortensens (Family Crisis Center), and Delikowskis for Sept, (Mobil Pantry.)  A new sheet with dates will be forthcoming. Group all helped Steve Brilowski load his truck with the donations for Salvation Army this past week-end.

5.      Web site:  Dave Fletcher is asking if Justice and Peace would like their own page on the parish web site. Benefits would be we could add pictures (with Sarah's help?) and post links of justice and peace issues and print articles on it as well. Anyone with computer savy would be appreciated to help us out.

6.      Personal Care Shower:  This shower offered in May has two week-end collections and collects no food but personal care items to benefit HIV/AIDS Ministry, Salvation Army, Family Crisis Center.  Mary Ann will check out what is needed to be done and will report at the May meeting.

7.      Justice and Peace Updates:  Mary Ann distributed a fact sheet on “Network” as people were unsure who and what they were.

8.      Meeting Dates: Rectory is collecting dates due by April 15 for meetings next year. Committee has dilemma that NO days work for everyone so we will meet in May on Monday May 5 and then look at Tues. or Thurs. in the fall. The time of 6pm is preferred and if possible we will continue every other month meetings as committee can work by email in between.  Monthly meetings will be called as needed, eg May for personal care shower and other topics of interest.

9.      Chair of Justice and Peace:  Mary Ann is very open to someone taking this task over as we all share in what needs to be done. It would involve chairing the meetings. Contact Mary Ann if interested.

10.  FYI:  Mark Molski and Sandy Starr (former J&P members) have indicated that they will be available for any projects we are doing.  Just call.

Prayers were provided by Dennis and Marcy Ferriter
