JUSTICE AND PEACE MINUTES    January 4, 2010

                                                ST. STAN’S PARISH

Call to Order:  Dennis Ferriter called the meeting to order at 6:30

Prayer:  Mary Ann is using  A Penitential Litany on justice issues from United State Conference of Catholic Bishops for the year.

Present:   Dennis and Marcy Ferriter, Beth Mortensen, Karen Clifford, Mary Ann Krems

Guests:     Dwaine Habrat and Chris Doubek.

Excused:  Becky Lee and Marilyn Slusarski

Old Business:

1.        Food Collection:  Operation Bootstrap:  Sarah Mrozinski Gwidt collected the food and delivered it. A Thank you was sent to the parish bulletin.

a.        February Food Collection will be to St. Vincent De Paul and Mortensens will coordinate

b.        PLEASE NOTE:  Second Harvest that we support in July has had a name change to INTERFAITH FOOD PANTRY PORTAGE COUNTY and Mel Dow is now the contact. mpdow@charter.net. The address is 821 6th St. Plover, WI.

2.        Salvation Army Dinner in December:  Meal went well and it was appreciated by residents. Fewer numbers were there due to being out ringing bells so leftover food was boxed up for them. Suggestion is that the next meal not be in Dec. Becky will be asking for parishioners to take on a meal with our assistance in the future.

3.        Time and Talent Sharing Sheets:  Discussion centered on how best to collate.  Beth will put a notice in the bulletin reminding parishioners to get sheets in if not already done so. Dwaine offered to meet with Sara at rectory as he explained the web software program for parishes has a time and talent area.  We will hold on to the sheets and alphabetize them to see how to proceed.  (FYI Dwaine did meet with Sara and they will get back to us when they figure it out.)

4.        Bulletin Board for Justice and Peace:  Mary Ann will meet with Alyssa Weber, a senior at SPASH who had agreed to help keep it updated.  Report at Feb. meeting.  Thank yous received will be posted as well as noted in the bulletin so parishioners know how gifts are received.

5.        Mission Projects:  A packet has been put together for the finance committee to approve our mission projects for the parish.  A letter was shared and edited for submitting with the projects.  Moved by Dennis and seconded by Karen of approving the letter and highly endorsing its message. Motion carried.

a.        It has been brought to our attention that Newman Center sends a group on a parish mission in the spring and is looking for assistance.  It would be possible to defer the “Working Boys Center in Quito” and replace it with help for Newman if committee approves. Referred for action at Feb. meeting.

b.        Consideration:  How about if we need to solicit money for the missions we ask for $1.00 contribution…eg. Suitcase costs for Sr. Catherine

6.        Christmas Dinner:  Chris Doubek met with us and all who worked felt it went well with the help of so many contributions. All bills have been submitted and a nice amount of free will donations were given.  Extra food was given to Salvation Army. Thank you notes were written and sent to those not of the J&P committee who gave so much of their time or food.  It was agreed to hold the dinner next year and remove the term for “those in need”.  It will be a parish event and we will invite “those in need” to join us.  Many of the purchases are enough that they will carry over to next year.

NEW BUSINESS:

1.  Dwain’s presence was appreciated.  He is a good messenger for changes that come from the diocese

                2.  Joint Justice and Peace Meetings: The next meeting will be in April.  Suggestion has been made to offer a presentation on Brother James Miller.  Mary Ann will coordinate with the Br. James Miller team to see what can be arranged.

                3. Mary Ann and Marcy shared news about a Poverty Simulation being held on Feb 12 by the Portage County Hunger Poverty Partnership.  Reservations are needed and there is no cost to attend. Go to www.hppp-pc.org for more information.
